What is a magnetic roller and what are its functions?

A magnetic roller is a method of separating metallic elements using magnetic conveyor belts to attract them. This type of roller is usually found at the end of the conveyor belt. This magnetic separator allows us to avoid damage to possible machinery and above all to the food we eat. This is why, for example in the food industry, food safety standards are required.

Types of magnetic rollers

There are mainly two types of magnetic rollers, depending on the material they are made of, we can find neodymium magnetic rollers and ferrite magnetic rollers, depending on the characteristic of the material from which they are to be separated. These permanent magnets are located in the center of the cylinder axis which is in constant rotation.

In the case that we want to obtain a greater force of attraction, we will use the neodymium, if, on the other hand, we prefer a greater resistance to the corrosion at the same time that an economic price, we will use the ferrite. In addition to these types of permanent magnets, we can also find alnico magnetic rollers, which allow us to use them under higher temperatures.

How do magnetic rollers work?

Magnetic rollers can be found at the end of the conveyor belt. As we can see in the picture, the metallic particles would be the grey-colored elements, while the materials from which we want to separate them are red. In the beginning, the two mixed elements circulate on the conveyor belt, while as it approaches the magnetic roller, the magnetic field has slowed down the fall due to the force of gravity. This force is neutralized for a short time by the magnetic force, allowing the separation of the metallic elements in a separate zone to the material in question.

Where can we find magnetic rollers?

This type of magnetic separator can be found in several sectors, but they are mainly used in the following sectors:

• Recycling and waste treatment
• Food industry
• Plastic and rubber industry
• Textile industry
• Extraction and treatment of minerals

Using magnetic rollers brings us many advantages to magnetic separation such as high processing capacity, these rollers are reliable devices with long service life. Furthermore, they do not require constant maintenance and have low operating requirements.
