Use of polyurethane profiles in the construction industry

The origin of polyurethane was thanks to Otto Bayer, trying to find a synthetic fiber to replace polyamide. Years later, in 1937, the patent was registered despite the fact that at the beginning it was thought that it was not going to be of any use. It was not until the Second World War that different brands began to be produced. The implementation of polyurethane was not until the 1990s that it began to be used in construction, more specifically to act as insulation for buildings.

The construction sector requires materials with high resistance, several materials need polyurethane for its proper functioning.

Polyurethane is a material that can be used for several applications due to its great number of advantages in the construction sector, such as:

• Thermal insulation: Thermal insulation can be found in walls and walls mostly, helping to keep the heat. This material is known for its low thermal conductivity.

• It reduces costs: By having a poor thermal conductivity and by diminishing the energy to cool and heat the house, we will reduce the consumption and therefore save on the cost.

• Water-repellent insulation: This material achieves a homogeneous coverage, because of this it achieves greater resistance and extends its useful life. Polyurethane is known for its application in swimming pool coatings.

• Sound insulation: The sound insulation we get because of the ability of polyurethane to absorb sound and consequently to soundproof the space.

• Sealant: The liquid polyurethane that serves as a sealant, in the same way this material is resistant to moisture so that the materials are not destroyed and maintain their characteristics.

• Decoration: This type of material can be found as an imitation of wood, stone and even marble finishes.

• Filling of spaces: Polyurethane is a material that can be used as a filler to avoid future filtrations.

This type of material is a very affordable synthetic material with many properties that favor the construction, so we can find it mostly in windows providing a correct air conditioning of the space.

One of the most common applications of polyurethane is the creation of columns, this material helps to improve the quality of the structure. In addition to this use, we can find several others such as: floors, facades and walls (buildings).
